Nicholas George Karthas, affectionately known as Nick, passed away on November 19, 2024 at the age of 98 in Long Beach, California. Born on November 30, 1925, in, Massachusetts, Nick lived a life full of service, dedication, and love.
Nick's remarkable journey began with his extensive military service, encompassing 34 years in the United States Navy where he served during conflicts including World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. His commitment to his country and bravery in the face of adversity stand out as some of his proudest accomplishments. Following his distinguished military career, Nick devoted over 40 years to educating future generations as a math instructor at Los Angeles Trade Technical College. His passion for teaching and his ability to connect with students made a lasting impact on countless lives.
Nick was known for his warm, kind-hearted personality. He was a social and outgoing individual who approached everyone with genuine care and compassion. Friends and family alike cherished his upbeat spirit and unwavering support.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Cynthia; son-in-law, Tom Stine; granddaughter, Julia Karthas Stine; and grandson-in-law, Brayden Morris. Nick was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Karthas, with whom he shared many cherished moments.
The memorial services for Nicholas will be held at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Long Beach, California. A special tribute will take place on December 4, 2024, beginning at 7:00 PM, followed by a Funeral Service on December 5, 2024, at 9:00 AM. The Graveside Service will also take place on December 5, 2024, at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California, starting at 1:00 PM.
Nick Karthas will be remembered fondly for his incredible contributions both as a soldier and a teacher. His legacy of love, kindness, and service will continue to inspire all who had the honor of knowing him.
